Well in the early days of the PC computer system, we would spend hours emulating other computers, to see if one computer could pretend to be another. Our early vision got extended to a point that multiple machines can be place on one server. The main reason for this is that it usually only takes a small amount of resources to allow simple emulation.
We soon had software like VMware coming out allowing Linux users to run full Windows based machines in-side the Linux machine without losing too much in the way of resources, but on top of that, you could run multiple version of the Windows based computer.
With so many emulators becoming more and more in the main stream, it wasn't long before Microsoft produced their own version Windows Virtual PC, especially after their success with Terminal Emulator and other companies such as Citrix . Sun Micro systems (Oracle) have also produced a free version called VirtualBox.
